One of my favorite things to do Saturday mornings after working out is to make a smoothie bowl. These tend to get a bad rap because in reality, you are putting a smoothie in a bowl and eating it with a spoon (it’s ‘hipster nonsense’ as my friend Nick likes to call it). However, I like to think of them more as ‘breakfast soups.’ They’re exactly the light snack I need to still give me enough energy to get the day started. Blended much thicker than a regular smoothie, and topped with all the goodies you can think of, they’re really very pretty to look at (and even prettier with an Instagram filter).
I constantly have people asking me how to make them, and I promise you there is no technique or recipe to follow. It’s just a matter of having ingredients to mix things up. My roommate and I have cupboards full of mason jars with chia seeds, hemp seeds, shredded coconut, sunflower seeds, etc. and these are what come in handy when I get the craving for a smoothie bowl. I’ve provided a few different options for inspiration!
Kale, Spinach, Avocado and Banana
Mixed Berry and Acai
Protein, Cookie Butter, Coconut Oil and Cacao
What tasty treats do you make when you’re looking for something light after a workout? For my fellow smoothie-bowlers, do you pack on your toppings, or is less more? Thanks for reading!
